Patient Financial Services

Payment for services should never be a barrier to the care that you or your loved one needs.

Our mission at LifeFlight is to provide critical care and medical transport services to anyone, anywhere in the State of Maine, when they need it. As a nonprofit, LifeFlight provides services to patients regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay for the cost of medical care. Our top priority is providing the best care possible.

LifeFlight’s Patient Financial Services Team is here to help.

Each patient’s circumstances are different. We work with all our patients to find payment options and a payment plan that works for them. We encourage patients and their families to contact our team to learn more about their LifeFlight bill and the options available.

Transport Bills from LifeFlight

Similarly to hospitals, LifeFlight bills a patient’s insurance for care. LifeFlight works hard to be in-network with most commercial insurance carriers and is enrolled as a provider with Medicare and MaineCare. While we can’t guarantee your benefit, many health insurance payors cover the costs of medically necessary transports.

Our charges are designed to cover our costs, and that’s it. Our billing practices are designed to protect patients, and we will advocate on your behalf with your insurance company.

Patients seeking to make a payment or to ask a question regarding a bill should contact our Patient Financial Services team at 207-275-0294 or lifeflightbilling@lifeflightmaine.org.

Charity Care

Patients needing LifeFlight services generally have significant other medical expenses. LifeFlight works diligently to be as cost-efficient as possible.

LifeFlight has a robust charity care program to help patients struggling to pay for costs not covered by insurance.

Elective Transports

For patients seeking an elective transport, LifeFlight’s Patient Financial Services Team can provide the information necessary for a patient and their family to make an informed decision.

Elective transports typically result in some financial responsibility on the part of the patient. Our team can provide an estimate of the charges. Patients have the right to work with their insurance provider, and our team will assist them.

Here are few notes to keep in mind when deciding on an elective transport:

  • Medicare won’t cover anything that’s not medically necessary.
  • Insurance typically will not pay to transfer a patient to another facility if the services needed can be performed at the current facility.
  • Insurance will likely pay for transport only to the nearest facility offering the medically necessary service (this depends on the payor).
