LifeFlight is a nonprofit organization comprised of three divisions: LifeFlight of Maine, which provides clinical operations; The LifeFlight Foundation, which helps fund aircraft, medical technology, clinical transport medicine education, and infrastructure; and LifeFlight Aviation Services which oversees aviation operations.
- LifeFlight of Maine was established in 1998 as Maine’s air ambulance service for critically ill and injured patients, providing care for the entirety of Maine and mutual aid throughout New England. LifeFlight is a nonprofit limited liability company with original funding from its members, Northern Light Health/ Eastern Maine Healthcare and Central Maine Healthcare, two of Maine’s largest nonprofit healthcare systems. LifeFlight is operated as an independent business unit.
- The LifeFlight Foundation (LFF) was established in 2003 as an independent charitable fundraising organization dedicated to supporting LifeFlight of Maine.
- LifeFlight Aviation Services, a wholly owned subsidiary of LifeFlight, was established in 2020 to manage aviation services and is the FAA Part 135 Air Carrier Certificate holder for LifeFlight.
LifeFlight of Maine Steering Committee
Governance of LifeFlight is managed through its Steering Committee, which is comprised of senior leadership from Northern Light Health and Central Maine Healthcare, as well as the LifeFlight Foundation. The Steering Committee serves as the LifeFlight Board of Directors and includes the Executive Directors of LifeFlight and the LifeFlight Foundation.

LifeFlight Foundation Board of Trustees
The LifeFlight Foundation Board has (up to) 15 trustees from around the state of Maine and who represent a wide range of industries, sectors, and communities. Each trustee is appointed for a three-year term and may serve up to three consecutive terms. The Board also has various committees that include both board and non-board members.
