Our Mission – More Than Just Helicopters

Our Mission.

We move the doors of the trauma center closer to the patient.

We deliver ICU-level care anywhere in Maine to anyone who needs us. Our highly skilled crew is equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment, which we bring to our patients with the speed of a helicopter, airplane, or ground ambulance. We give people in Maine facing critical illness or injury their best chance on their worst day.

About Us.

We are an independent nonprofit and Maine’s only air ambulance service.

Our commitment to Maine is that every person, in every community, has access to critical care and medical transport when needed.

We send a critical care team to a patient on average every 3.5 hours.

More than just helicopters.

ICU-level medical care in a helicopter, airplane, or ambulance.

Our highly skilled medical teams bring ICU-level medical care — referred to in the industry as “critical care” — directly to the patient, wherever they are.

Maine is a big state, and many communities are rural, remote, and sparsely populated. As part of the “chain of survival,” our crews play a vital role in connecting people to the care they need.

Since we began in 1998, we have safely cared for and transported nearly 40,000 patients from every community and hospital in the state. We have been recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in the field of transport medicine for quality, safety, community service, innovation, and patient care.

Our crew gives people their best chance on their worst day.

There when you need us.

We’re there when minutes matter.

For many of our patients, minutes make all the difference.

The care that a patient gets in the first 60 minutes after a heart attack, stroke, car accident, or other medical emergency will likely determine the outcome. Whether the call comes from a rural hospital or a first responder on scene, LifeFlight is ready.

Our five helicopters, fixed-wing airplane, and specialized ground ambulances operate from bases our in Sanford, Lewiston, and Bangor. Our medical teams are standing by every day and night of the year, ready to answer the call for help.

In a sparsely populated state like Maine, the most effective way to deliver critical care is to put the ICU in a helicopter.

Our Core Values

Our patients are at the center of all that we do, and they deserve uncompromising standards:

  • Uncompromising standards for safety: We are empowered to make decisions about our safety and our patient’s safety.
  • Uncompromising standards for clinical excellence: Driven by constant evaluation of current best practice, we continually strive to set the highest standards possible and ensure everyone is given the tools necessary to meet those standards.
  • Uncompromising standards for each mission: We will do everything we can to care for our patient and serve the people of Maine, and we will do it with grace and kindness.
  • Uncompromising standards for the team: We are committed to an environment of open, honest dialogue where we can learn and grow from our experiences.

Our Organization

LifeFlight is a nonprofit organization comprised of three divisions:

  • LifeFlight of Maine, which is a nonprofit and one of the premier air medical programs in the country.
  • LifeFlight Aviation Services, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of LifeFlight of Maine that maintains and operates LifeFlight of Maine’s aircraft as an FAA Part 135 Air Carrier Certificate holder.
  • The LifeFlight Foundation, which is a separate but interrelated nonprofit that raises funds and public awareness of LifeFlight of Maine’s mission.

As a nonprofit, we depend on the support of individuals, towns, businesses, hospitals, and others to continuously maintain and upgrade our fleet, medical equipment, education programs, and infrastructure.
