In 1998, Maine had no dedicated air medical transport.
Celebrating 25 Years of Safely Caring for and Transporting the People of Maine.
In April 1998, medical and physician leaders, together with then Governor Angus King, stood in the Hall of Flags in Augusta and delivered a promise to the people of Maine: to create a nonprofit organization with a distinct and statewide public mission. LifeFlight of Maine is that promise.
At that time, Maine was the only state in the country without access to a dedicated air medical system. The mandate was to create the safest world-class air medical system possible. Governor King said, “Maine just got smaller,” recognizing how LifeFlight would change “the geography of time” in critical injury and illness.
LifeFlight of Maine is the state’s only air ambulance service.
Now in its 25th year, LifeFlight has served more than 36,000 patients, one life at a time, from every community and hospital in the state.
LifeFlight has become nationally and internationally recognized as a leader in the field of transport medicine for quality, safety, community service, and innovation. We play a critical role in the “chain of survival” by connecting people to the care they need.
Our commitment to Maine is that every person, in every community, has access to critical care and medical transport when needed.
