Ted Freeman Joins LifeFlight of Maine as Chief Pilot
Bangor, Maine – Ted Freeman joined the LifeFlight of Maine team this week as Chief Pilot, a critical leadership role in LifeFlight’s aviation program. Ted has nearly two decades of experience in aviation. As Chief Pilot, Ted is responsible for ensuring that all LifeFlight Aviation Services (LFAS) flight operations comply with Federal Aviation Regulations, as well as LifeFlight’s own high standards and rigorous safety policies. Ted will also supervise LifeFlight’s team of pilots, overseeing training and ensuring aviators maintain required certifications and operational readiness.
Prior to joining LifeFlight of Maine, Ted gained extensive flying experience across the country. His previous roles in aviation included supporting offshore operations, assisting law enforcement, helping with search-and-rescue missions, and providing lifesaving medical transport by air. Notably, Ted is certified to fly both types of aircraft in LifeFlight of Maine’s fleet: the Agusta 109SP helicopter and the Beechcraft King Air 200 airplane.

“Ted brings a wealth of aviation experience to our team in both rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft,” said LifeFlight’s Director of Operations, Peter Cartmell. “Ted also brings previous experience with LifeFlight of Maine. He previously served as Chief Pilot and Check Airman with 7Bar Aviation where he conducted numerous training and check flights with many of our current pilots.” (Prior to establishing LifeFlight Aviation Services, a wholly owned subsidiary of LifeFlight of Maine and its FAA Part 135 Certificate operator, LifeFlight contracted all aviation operations through 7Bar Aviation.)
Most recently, Ted held the role of Aviation Training Director for Guardian Flight, where he oversaw training for more than 240 pilots nationwide. Ted said he’s looking forward to returning to a smaller organization making a tangible difference in communities across Maine.
“Serving the community is something I did when I worked with the state police. It was great to have that sense of accomplishment and pride in service,” said Ted. “My number one goal is to be a positive presence and asset to LifeFlight of Maine. I’m excited to be here, excited to get started, and I am very much looking forward to getting to know the organization even better,” he added.
Ted has more than 4,000 hours of combined flight experience between helicopters and airplanes.
“Ted’s leadership experience and deep operational knowledge will be invaluable as we continue to grow and strengthen our aviation program,” said Pete. “We’re thrilled to have him on board and look forward to the expertise, mentorship, and vision he will bring to our team.”
Ted earned a Bachelor of Science at Virginia Tech, and an International Baccalaureate at the International School of Geneva. He is fluent in English, French, and Swedish.
